Two neighbouring tiger reserves, two very different forests — the teak hills of Pench and the Sal meadows of Kanha, back to back in four nights.
Pench, on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, is a forest of rolling teak woodland, open grassland and the slow bends of the Pench River. Visibility is good across much of the reserve, and it supports one of Central India's healthiest populations of Indian Wild Dogs alongside its Tigers and Leopards.
From Pench the journey continues to Kanha, one of India's oldest National Parks. Towering Sal forests open onto wide meadows where Hard-ground Barasingha — brought back from the edge of extinction here — graze within sight of the tree line, and the mist often lingers over the grass well after sunrise.
Seeing the two reserves in sequence shows how much Central India's tiger country changes within a few hours' drive: different trees, different light, different ways of looking for the same animal.
Across seven safaris led by experienced naturalists and accompanied by a Beyond Wild wildlife expert, this is a compact way to spend as much of your time as possible inside the forest.
This is a fixed-date group departure: the dates, your lodge, two safaris a day and your instructor are all set — ideal for solo travellers and small groups who want a great trip without the planning. Between drives there's time to rest, review photos, and swap notes over chai with your naturalist.
Upon arrival at Nagpur Airport, you will be welcomed by the Beyond Wild team before beginning the scenic drive to Pench Tiger Reserve.
Leaving the city behind, the landscape gradually transforms into rolling countryside, forests and small villages before finally reaching the beautiful teak forests of Pench.
After checking into your jungle resort and enjoying lunch, prepare for your first safari.
As the afternoon light softens across the woodland, the forest slowly comes alive. Herds of deer emerge into open clearings, langurs keep watch from towering trees and predators begin to stir as temperatures cool. There could be no finer introduction to this remarkable reserve.
Return to the resort after sunset for dinner and overnight stay.
The day begins early, when the forest is at its quietest and wildlife activity is already underway.
Today is devoted to discovering the many moods of Pench.
Each morning begins before sunrise, when the forest is calm and wildlife is at its most active.
Fresh pugmarks often reveal the movements of a tiger during the night, while alarm calls from Chital and Langurs hint at the presence of nearby predators.
As the morning unfolds, Pench's beautiful landscapes become every bit as memorable as its wildlife.
Between drives, return to the lodge to rest and enjoy a leisurely meal before heading out again later in the day.
One last morning in Pench, setting out before sunrise while the teak woodland is still cool and the night's tracks are fresh on the road.
After breakfast, check out and begin the drive to Kanha. The road leaves the Pench hills behind and climbs gradually into the Sal country of the Maikal range.
Check in to your jungle resort in Kanha and spend the evening at leisure.
Dinner and overnight in Kanha.
Rise before sunrise and head into Kanha while the meadows are still touched by mist. Barasingha and Chital begin to emerge into the open grasslands, while the first calls from the Sal forest help reveal where the jungle is already stirring.
The morning drive takes its rhythm from the forest itself. Fresh pugmarks, alarm calls and movement along the tracks may shape our route as we explore different habitats in search of Tigers and the many species that share their territory.
Return to the resort for lunch and a leisurely break before setting out again in the afternoon. As the light warms the woodland, bamboo thickets, waterholes and open clearings take on a different character, offering a fresh perspective on Kanha.
Your final morning safari is one more chance to watch Kanha's meadows come alive — Barasingha in the grass, the first alarm calls from the Sal.
After breakfast, check out and drive to Raipur or Nagpur for your onward journey.
