Our favourite gate is Gothangaon, thanks to its outstanding wildlife and the exceptional Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy.
However, depending on recent sightings, we frequently recommend combining Gothangaon, Karhandla and Pauni during the same trip to maximise your wildlife experience.
When is the best time to visit?+
Every season offers something different.
October to February
Pleasant weather, beautiful forests and excellent opportunities for wildlife photography. Tigers are very active in the cold months and it is always a pleasure in tracking them.
March to June
As water sources become limited, wildlife becomes easier to locate. Summer generally offers the highest chances of prolonged tiger sightings.
July to September
The monsoon offers amazing green landscapes and the park remains open.
How many nights do you recommend?+
For first-time visitors, we recommend 2 nights with 4 safaris.
Wildlife photographers often stay 3 nights or more, especially when combining different safari gates.
How many safaris should we book?+
Our recommendation is:
• Minimum: 4 safaris
• Ideal: 5 to 6 safaris
Each safari is different, and changing gates often produces very different wildlife experiences.
Are tiger sightings guaranteed?+
No.
Tigers are wild animals, and no one can guarantee a sighting.
That said, Umred Karhandla has developed an excellent reputation for consistent tiger sightings over recent years.
What are the chances of seeing a tiger?+
Very good.
The sanctuary supports a healthy tiger population, and because visitor numbers remain relatively low, safaris are often relaxed and highly rewarding.
What happened to F2 and her five cubs?+
F2 became one of Umred's most famous tigresses after successfully raising a litter of five cubs.
As is natural with wild tigers, the cubs eventually dispersed to establish territories of their own.
More recently, F2 has successfully raised a new litter of four cubs, continuing her remarkable contribution to the sanctuary's thriving tiger population.

There are very few accommodation options close to Gothangaon Gate.
Apart from the Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy, only a handful of simple homestays are available nearby.

There are several comfortable hotels near Karhandla Gate, approximately 30 to 40 minutes from the Gothangaon tourism area.
Many guests choose to stay there while combining safaris through Gothangaon, Karhandla and Pauni.

Safari permits are limited.
For weekends, holidays and the winter season, we recommend booking 3 to 4 months in advance.
Bamboo Forest Nature Conservancy is also in high demand and should be booked as early as possible.

Can we bring our cameras?+
Absolutely.
Umred Karhandla offers excellent wildlife photography opportunities with beautiful forest tracks, bamboo groves and frequent close wildlife encounters.

Is Umred suitable for children and senior citizens?+
Yes.
It is an excellent destination for families as well as senior travellers.
Guests should be comfortable sitting in an open safari vehicle for approximately four hours.
Is there mobile network inside the park?+
Mobile coverage is limited inside the sanctuary.
Most accommodation offers reasonable connectivity, but once you're inside the forest, the focus naturally shifts to the wildlife around you.
Can we get out of the safari vehicle?+
No.
Guests must remain inside the safari vehicle throughout the safari unless instructed otherwise by Forest Department officials.
What if we don't see a tiger?+
You'll still have experienced one of Maharashtra's most peaceful wildlife destinations.
Watching gaur grazing through the forest, spotting a leopard at dusk, listening to the calls of jungle birds or simply enjoying the tranquillity of a forest with very few vehicles makes Umred a rewarding experience in its own right.

Are mobile phones allowed on safari?+
No.
You can either leave them at your accommodation or keep them in the locker provided by the Forest Department. The locker remains with your safari vehicle throughout the drive.
