There are few places on Earth where wildlife encounters rival those of the Pantanal. Covering an immense expanse of tropical wetlands in western Brazil, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is widely regarded as the finest destination in the world to observe wild Jaguars. Unlike dense rainforests where big cats remain elusive, the rivers and open marshes of the Pantanal provide extraordinary opportunities to watch these magnificent predators hunting, swimming, resting and interacting in broad daylight.

Our carefully designed expedition combines three exceptional wildlife lodges with dedicated boat safaris, guided nature walks and game drives, allowing you to experience the incredible diversity of this remarkable ecosystem. While Jaguars are undoubtedly the stars of the show, the Pantanal offers so much more. Giant River Otters patrol the waterways, families of Capybara graze along the riverbanks, Yacare Caimans bask in astonishing numbers and Giant Anteaters, Tapirs and Marsh Deer are frequently encountered.

For bird enthusiasts, the Pantanal is equally spectacular. Brilliant Hyacinth Macaws, Jabiru Storks, Toucans, Kingfishers, Herons and hundreds of other species make this one of South America's premier birdwatching destinations.

Travelling with Beyond Wild means far more than simply ticking a destination off your list. Our expeditions are carefully paced, led by experienced wildlife experts and designed for photographers, naturalists and wildlife enthusiasts who wish to maximise both sightings and time in the field. Whether you are chasing your first Jaguar sighting or returning to photograph one of the world's greatest predators, this promises to be an unforgettable wildlife adventure.

This is a fixed-date group departure: the dates, your lodge, two safaris a day and your instructor are all set. You simply reserve your seat — ideal for solo travellers and small groups who want a great trip without the planning. Between drives there's time to rest, review photos, and swap notes over chai with your naturalist.

The route, stop by stop

Day 1

Cuiabá to Porto Jofre via the Transpantaneira

Your adventure begins early this morning as we depart Cuiabá and drive south along the famous Transpantaneira Highway, one of the world's greatest wildlife roads. Even before reaching our lodge, the journey itself offers outstanding opportunities to observe the rich biodiversity of the Pantanal.
The route passes through vast wetlands, gallery forests and open grasslands where Jabiru Storks, Hyacinth Macaws, Toucans, Caimans, Capybaras and numerous raptors are commonly encountered. We make frequent stops for wildlife viewing and photography before reaching our lodge in the late afternoon.
After settling into your rooms, relax and enjoy your first evening surrounded by the sounds of the Pantanal.
Overnight: Pousada Berço Pantaneiro

Day 2 · Days 2

4 – Full-Day Jaguar Boat Safaris

The next three days are devoted entirely to exploring the legendary Jaguar territory around Porto Jofre.
Each morning we board specially designed safari boats and venture deep into the maze of rivers, oxbow lakes and narrow channels that make this region so productive for wildlife. Unlike conventional game drives, these boat safaris allow us to quietly approach wildlife along the riverbanks, providing remarkable photographic opportunities.
Our primary objective is the Jaguar, but every outing reveals a wealth of other species. Giant River Otters often fish in family groups, Black Howler Monkeys call from the forest canopy, Capybaras lounge beside the water while thousands of Yacare Caimans line the muddy banks. Birdlife is simply exceptional, with Kingfishers, Herons, Hawks, Jabirus and Hyacinth Macaws frequently encountered throughout the day.
Lunch is served on board, allowing us to maximise our time on the river before returning to the lodge around sunset.
Overnight: Pousada Berço Pantaneiro

Day 5

Rio Claro

After breakfast we leave Porto Jofre and journey towards Rio Claro, another wildlife-rich region of the northern Pantanal.
Following lunch at the lodge, we enjoy a leisurely boat excursion along the Rio Claro River, offering excellent opportunities to observe aquatic birds, Giant River Otters and Marsh Deer. After dinner we head out once again for an exciting night safari, searching for nocturnal wildlife including Ocelots, Nightjars, Crab-eating Foxes and other elusive species.
Overnight: Pousada Rio Claro

Day 6

Nature Walks and Piuval Lodge

This morning begins with a guided nature walk through the surrounding forest and wetlands. Travelling on foot allows us to appreciate the smaller details of the Pantanal ecosystem while searching for colourful birds, reptiles and mammals that often go unnoticed from vehicles.
Later we continue to our final lodge, Pousada Piuval, where the afternoon is spent exploring the surrounding habitat before enjoying another evening wildlife activity under the stars.
Overnight: Pousada Piuval

Day 7

Jeep Safari and Wildlife Exploration

Our final full day offers a different perspective of the Pantanal through an extensive jeep safari across private reserve tracks.
These habitats are ideal for species less commonly encountered along the rivers, including Giant Anteaters, Tapirs, Marsh Deer, Armadillos and an extraordinary variety of birds. The slower pace allows ample opportunities for photography while enjoying the spectacular landscapes of Brazil's largest wetland.
A relaxed final evening provides time to reflect on an unforgettable week of wildlife encounters.
Overnight: Pousada Piuval
